In the month before the ancient Olympics no wars were permitted so that spectators could travel from across Greece unharmed. They introduced the alphabet to Europe and their writings are so well-preserved we still read books such as The Iliad today. Sometimes groups of city-states would unite to fight other groups of city-states in large wars.
